The Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Presentation Ceremony 2020 & 2021 was held on 21 June 2021 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.  Michael KWOK and Emily WONG, Year 3 students from Dual Degree Program in Technology & Management (T&M-DDP), and Rainbow LAM, a Year 2 student from Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) were awarded with the Scholarship.

Jointly supported and sponsored by the Innovation and Technology Commission and HSBC, and organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), the Scholarship selects 25 local undergraduates with enthusiasm in innovation and technology (I&T) who are nominated by the Vice-Chancellors or Presidents of universities in Hong Kong each year. Each of them is awarded a scholarship of up to $150,000 with a full slate of support for acquiring cross-cultural experience. The aim is to help them explore their I&T potentials for pursuing a career in the field and contributing to Hong Kong’s I&T development, reinforcing the city’s status as an international I&T hub.

Mrs. Carrie LAM, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Ms. Diana CESAR, Chief Executive of HSBC Hong Kong, Mr. Andy HO, Executive Director of The HKFYG and Mr. Bernard CHAN, Chairman of the Awardee Selection Committee, kicked off the award presentation ceremony with encouraging speeches. Mrs. Carrie LAM then presented the certificates to the awardees of 2020 and 2021. 3 awardees in 2020 and 4  awardees in 2021 are from the HKUST.

Michael KWOK, a Year 3 student of T&M-DDP, is one of the awardees of The Innovation and Technology Scholarship 2020. He is very humbled to receive the scholarship. Despite the cancellation of exchange program due to the pandemic, the scholarship still provided him a valuable platform to connect with many scholars and distinguished mentors. He learned a lot about the technological developments in fields such as occupational therapy, medicine, and even textiles through the networking sessions. As a student with an engineering background, he was surprised to see the sheer amount of technological progress being made in almost every field, even those seemingly unrelated to tech field. He is very grateful to meet some of the most driven, passionate, and ardent people through these connections and believed that the experiences gained will serve him well in his future career as he explores his path. He plans to utilize the scholarship for online courses on data science, and also fabricate a modular and compact 3D printer with a few HKUST scholars.

Rainbow LAM, a Year 2 student of EVMT, is one of the awardees of The Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award 2021.  She is very excited and grateful for the upcoming opportunities to explore and learn more about sustainability initiatives from  her mentor, Professor Daniel M CHENG,BBS, MH, JP, Managing Director of Dunwell Enviro-Tech (Holdings) Ltd and the exchange to Singapore, a well-known green country.   Through this Scholarship, Rainbow wants to gain insights and be inspired on how to transform Hong Kong into a a smart and sustainable city.  She believes applying innovation and technology to the sustainable field is crucial to improve the lives of Hong Kong citizens to adapt and mitigate climate-change related risks we may face in the future.

Emily WONG, also a Year 3 student of T&M-DDP, is another awardee from the Scholarship Award 2021.  She is thankful that the scholarship provides an excellent outreach opportunity by supporting her exchange in Finland during the coming Spring semester. Moreover, she is able to build a network with passionate peers, alumnus of the Scholarships and industry experts as mentors. The network has enabled her to explore the various intricacies and advancements in the booming tech fields, which has shown to be greatly beneficial to her personal development and to society as a whole.
